Does Raising Your Laptop Actually Keep It Cooler?

"Laptop stands improve cooling" is one of those claims repeated so often that nobody checks it. It is broadly true — but the mechanism is not the one most product descriptions imply, and knowing the difference tells you which stand to buy.

Where the air actually goes

Most laptops pull cool air in through vents on the underside, push it across a heatsink, and exhaust it out of the back or side. A few draw air in through the keyboard instead. Almost none exhaust downward.

So the underside is usually the intake. That matters, because it changes what "blocking the vents" means: when you smother the underside, the machine is not failing to get rid of heat so much as failing to get hold of cool air in the first place.

The surface matters more than the height

On a hard desk, a laptop's rubber feet already lift it a few millimetres, and that gap is often enough for the intake to work. This is why a laptop on a wooden desk may run perfectly cool with no stand at all.

On a soft surface — a bed, a sofa, a cushion, your lap — the fabric collapses around the base, seals the intake, and the machine slowly cooks. The temperature difference between a laptop on a desk and the same laptop on a duvet is dramatic. The difference between a desk and a stand is usually modest.

The honest summary: a stand makes a large difference compared with a soft surface, a small-to-moderate difference compared with a bare desk, and no difference at all if your laptop was never thermally limited to begin with.

The reason to buy one anyway

Cooling is the headline, but it is rarely the best argument. The better argument is the same one that applies to monitors: a laptop screen sits far too low.

Used flat on a desk, a laptop forces you to look down at roughly 30 degrees for however many hours you work. A stand that lifts and tilts the screen brings it closer to eye level, which is the change your neck will actually notice. See our guide to monitor height for the underlying rule.

The trade-off: once the screen is raised, the built-in keyboard is at the wrong height and the wrong angle. Raising the laptop and continuing to type on it moves the problem from your neck to your wrists. If you lift the screen, plan on an external keyboard.

Choosing between the styles

Our laptop and tablet stands fall into three broad shapes, and they suit genuinely different people.

Fixed-angle risers

One height, one angle, no moving parts. Most stable of the three and usually the best looking, because there is no hinge to design around. Choose this if your setup never changes.

Adjustable and folding stands

Multiple height steps, and they fold flat to travel. Slightly less rigid than a fixed riser, and far more useful if you work in more than one place or share the desk with someone taller.

Vertical docks

Hold the laptop closed and on its edge, like a book on a shelf. These are not for using the laptop — they are for getting a closed laptop off the desk entirely when you work from an external monitor. A triple-slot dock will also swallow a tablet and a notebook.

Three things worth checking before you buy

  • Contact points. Look for silicone or felt pads where the stand touches the chassis. Bare metal against aluminium leaves marks.
  • Port access. Some stands cover side ports or sit where the charging cable wants to go. Check against the side you actually plug into.
  • Weight rating and footprint. A 16-inch laptop on a stand sized for a 13-inch one is top-heavy and unpleasant to type on.

The free version

In the spirit of honesty: if you only want the cooling benefit, and you use your laptop on a hard desk, you may already have most of it. Stop using it on soft surfaces, keep the vents clear of paper, and blow the dust out of the fans once a year.

Buy the stand for the screen height. The cooling is a bonus that comes along with it.
